Training Saved the Fox

Training Saved The Fox

Dogtech Dog Trainer Anita Strong had a recent unique experience where she got to train a Fox

Jasper is not one of your regular everyday pupil. Jasper is a FOX!! This is his story with a happy “furry tail” ending!

Jasper was found in the bush with his litter mates, and taken in by Sydney Fox Rescue. My client and her son were volunteers there, and adopted Jasper. New South Wales is the only state in Australia where it’s legal to keep foxes as pets.

When the client asked me on the phone to train her fox to walk on the lead, so that she could socialise him at dog parks, I thought it was a prank! However, sure enough, there was a fox in the living room when I arrived. I proceeded to train Jasper as I would a puppy, and he proved to be a star pupil – responsive and intelligent – especially with the freshly cooked liver! A few days after the training, I received an update that Jasper was doing really well and happily walking on the lead. I was delighted to hear it – good result, happy client! Maybe more foxes to train, as the client has apparently been raving on about Jasper’s training to Sydney Fox Rescue.

Then came the bad news – Jasper had escaped! The owners were devastated of course, as was I. I tried to console myself that maybe it was not meant to be, that foxes belong in the wild. As days went by, despite posters, door knocks, broadcasts etc etc, hopes were waning of Jasper’s safe return …..

One night, when I checked my SMS before going to bed, there it was “My baby’s come home!!”

Looking for a dog trainer? Dogtech are dog behaviour specialists.

The fortuitous return of Jasper – a very nice lady was taking photographs  in the bush at dusk and spotted him. He turned up the next morning, she took more photos and noticed his collar. She tried to enlarge the pictures to read his collar but couldn’t and rang the Council. My client went there that night, and managed only to feed him – and he SAT, as he was trained to do! The next morning, she went back at dawn, and Jasper leapt into her arms!!  How amazing was that!

My client posted this message on Facebook “The training saved him – his discipline helped me get him back after he was lost.”
